5% of mares still go into heat when taking this medication. The most frequently reported adverse reaction is an increase in genitalia.
What special precautions are there?
IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION: REGU-MATE (altrenogest) should not be used in mares that have a previous or current uterine inflammation. Pregnant women or women who suspect they are pregnant should avoid contact with REGU-MATE. Women of childbearing age should take precautions when handling this product. Accidental absorption, such as through skin contact, could lead to a disruption of the menstrual cycle or prolongation of pregnancy. Gloves must be worn by all persons who handle this product and who come in contact with contaminated surfaces.

The response to treatment will depend on mares ovarian activity. Mares with more activity will start a regular cycle and get pregnant more quickly than inactive mares.
Overview
Apply protective gloves. Remove the shipping cap and then the seal, replacing the luer lock syringe (with no needle). Draw out the proper volume of solution. Never remove the syringe when the bottle is in an inverted position. This can cause spillage. Detach the syringe, then administer orally at a rate of 1mL for every 110 pounds of body weight. Administer once daily for 15 days in a row. This product may be directly administered to your horse's mouth, or it can be mixed with their food. Replace the cover on the dispensing tip to avoid leakage.
