How does Ivomec Pour-On work?
A member of the macrocyclic lactone class of endectocides, ivermectin has a mode of action that is unique. Compounds in this class bind with high affinity and selectively to ion channels that are glutamate-gated. This primarily occurs in muscle and nerve cells of invertebrates. This leads to paralysis and death of the parasite due to hyperpolarization of the muscle or nerve or muscle cell, along with increased permeability of the cell membrane to chloride ions. This compound class interacts with ligand-gated chloride channels, like ones gated by the neurotransmitter GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid). Mammals don’t have glutamate-gated chloride channels, which is why there’s a safety margin for this class of compounds. The macrocyclic lactones don’t typically cross the blood-brain barrier and have little affinity for mammal’s ligand-gated chloride channels.
