Cats with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, hypertension, or supraventricular tachyarrhythmia are frequently given Diltiazem XR (Cardizem). It's also used to treat hypertension and supraventricular tachycardia (SVTs) in dogs.

How does Diltiazem XR Capsule work?
Veterinarians often recommend diltiazem for patients who have cardiac arrhythmia or hypertension. This calcium channel blocker promotes vasodilation and decreases the sinus firing rate, lowering cardiac afterload, blood pressure, and peripheral resistance. This medicine is less likely than other types of calcium channel blocking treatment to affect cardiac contractility when given per your veterinarian's instructions. It is quickly absorbed and processed by the liver after being consumed orally. Cats have higher medication bioavailability than dogs, and both have lower amounts than humans.
